What MX5 Do I Have?

Mk1, Mk2, Mk2.5 or Mk3?
Mk1 cars were built between 1989 and 1997 (although some are registered as late as 1998 'R' reg) and have pop-up headlights.

Mk2 cars were built between 1998 and 2005 and have fixed headlamps.
Mk2 MX5
There is a facelifted version of the Mk2 commonly referred to as the 'Mk2.5' which was produced from 2000-2005. The easiest way to identify this model is via the headlamps, below:

Mk3 cars are the latest model, built from 2005 -on.

UK spec or Japanese import?

'UK' and 'Japanese' MX5s are all built in the same factory in Japan. The only definite way to tell if you have a UK spec car rather than an import is to check the chassis number. This is on the car log book (V5) or you can check the VIN plate on the engine bay, pictured below:
VIN Location
UK MX5s have 17 digit chassis numbers starting with: 'JMZNxxxxxxxxxxxxx'
Japanese MX5s have 10 digit numbers starting with:
  • 'NA6C-xxxxxx' Mk1 1.6
  • 'NA8C-xxxxxx' Mk1 1.8
  • 'NB6C-xxxxxx' Mk2 1.6
  • 'NB8C-xxxxxx' Mk2 1.8
You can also spot imports from trim levels, badges and (easiest way) the registration number split over 2 lines on the rear plate.
